'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D' spin-off or separate series?

The suspense around the spin-off to "Agents of the S.H.I.E.L.D." continues. Variety had reported earlier that the spin-off would no longer be going forward, but a new project with Bobbi "Mockingbird" Morse as the central character is expected to be given the green light.

When the renewal for a 3rd season of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." was given the go ahead in May this year, a related series, to be titled "Marvel's Most Wanted," also received a pilot order in August 2015.

The whole drama started back in May. From the beginning, it was clear that a new series would be commissioned in the future centering around popular characters, Bobbi "Mockingbird" Morse and Nick "Lance Hunter" Blood. The confusion was – would it be a spin-off or a stand-alone series?

Speculations are high that a pilot has been ordered in August and cast members Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood will be the main stars of the show. The series will continue the popular pair's adventures.

The dilly-dallying could be because of two reasons. Firstly, the first season of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." peaked from high to low ratings towards its end and received mixed reviews. The second season did better and showed consistent ratings. During these two seasons, the characters of Mockingbird and Lance Hunter became popular and audience wanted more of them. The question was how to take these characters forward.

The second reason is Marvel seems much more focused on its Netflix projects. It has "Daredevil" renewed for a second season. It also has the series "Jessica Jones," "Luke Cage," "Iron Fist" and the mini-series "The Defenders" given the go ahead. With so much on its plate, will Marvel be in a position to take on another spin-off or a stand-alone series?

The "Marvel's Most Wanted" pilot project has been co-created for Marvel and ABC Studios by S.H.I.E.L.D. producers Jeffrey Bell and Paul Zbyszewski. If the series is commissioned, both will be showrunners and Marvel's head of television Jeph Loeb will join the two as executive producers, according to Variety.
