"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," Marvel's new show was picked up by ABC and the first episode will be directed by Joss Whedon, who also co-wrote the pilot along with brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. The show takes place in the same universe as "The Avengers" and brings back Agent Phil Coulson, who was killed by Loki in the film.
Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." functions as a spinoff of the "Avengers" universe, and the preview video was released recently showcasing the show's agents. Clark Gregg returns as Agent Phil Coulson, thanks to a viral "Coulson lives" campaign after he was killed in "The Avengers." Ming-Na Wen plays Agent Melinda May, Elizabeth Henstridge is Jenna Simmons, Ian De Caestecker is Leo Fitz, Brett Dalton is Grant Ward, and Chloe Bennet is Skye.
The supernatural-themed series will cover many strange events, including the circumstances that led to Coulson coming back from the dead. In addition, the Rising Tide organization plays the angle that humans are discovering superheroes for the first time and the controversy that brings.
"We work the cases that S.H.I.E.L.D. hasn't classified," Coulson says in a voice-over for the 30-second spot. "The whole world's in on the action."
Rising Tide has a viral website acting as a booster for the series asking the questions real humans would a world of Gamma ray-laden monsters, flying super-suited billionaires, and Norse gods.
"Who is S.H.I.E.L.D.? What are they hiding?" the website reads. "Super-powers are real. Aliens exist. What else is out there? We will uncover the truth. We will not remain silent any longer."
The news comes as ABC revealed its line-up will be changing significantly starting in the fall. "Happy Endings," "Body of Proof," "666 Park Ave.," "Red Widow," "Zero Hour" and "Malibu Country" were axed along with others, but the network ordered seven dramas and five comedies to help replace the canceled shows.
