Alanis Morissette Records Campaign Song for Congressional Candidate (VIDEO)
Alanis Morissette offered her vocals to a political cause two years after recording her last album this week.
The "You Oughta Know" singer has not released an album since "Havoc and Bright Lights" in 2012. However, Morissette laid down a track at the request of Marianne Williamson who is running for a seat in California's 33rd Congressional district this year. Grammy Award-winning Morissette wrote and recorded the song herself.
"I was attempting to capture the passion, mission, activism, deep humanity and tenderness of Marianne, the new political sensibility she represents and the consciousness that produced it," Morissette said in a statement, according to ABC News.
While Morissette retains her Canadian citizenship, the singer became a U.S. citizen in 2005. She lives with her husband, rapper Mario "Souleye" Treadway, and their son, Ever Imre Morissette-Treadway, in Los Angeles.
"I love this song. I love@Marwilliamson & love a world that would vote for her," Morissette posted to Twitter on Monday, May 5 along with a link to "Today."
"Go to marianneforcongress.com/alanis to download #Today for free," she added.
For her part, Williamson said she is "thrilled that Alanis has written and recorded the song," which is entitled "Today."
"Her artistic genius is a gift to the world," the independent Congressional candidate added. "The fact that she would use it in support of my campaign is the highest honor I can imagine."
Williamson aims to replace Rep. Henry Waxman, a Democrat who is retiring, in California's 33rd Congressional district- which covers celebrity-stocked areas including Malibu, Beverly Hills and Bel Air. Morissette is not the first high-profile supporter of Williamson- Katy Perry has attended her events, while Nicole Richie and Eva Longoria have shot campaign ads for the Congress hopeful. Moreover, Kim Kardashian officially endorsed Williamson in a blog post to her website.
