Alaska's Pavlof Volcano Gearing to Erupt; USGS Issues Alert [DETAILS]

Mount Pavlof in Alaska May Errupt for the Third Time This Year

The Pavlof Volcano in Alaska may erupt for the third time this year, with the latest advisory upgraded this week.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has issued an alert that the Pavlof erupted over the weekend, and the affected area should be avoided. While the volcano is away from populated areas, it is a regular route for passenger airlines.

Pavlof Volcano Eruption Imminent?
It is possible that the Pavlof Volcano in Alaska will errupt anytime this month as scientists have observed higher activity than usual. According to Alaska Dispatch News, the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) upped the alert level to "advisory" on Friday. Furthermore, the volcano code has been lighted to yellow instead of the usual green color.

"What that means is the volcano has moved from its normal non-eruptive activity to a level unrest, where it could erupt," AVO researcher Robert McGimsey said.

Furthermore, the possibility of the Pavlof Volcano errupting soon may be found in the AVO remarks posted on their website. It is considered to be one of the most "consistently active volcanoes" in Alaska. Ash may shoot up as high as 49,000 ft and could reach as far as eastern Canada, according to their observations.

Mount Pavlof has erupted more than 40 times since the dawn of record-making. It is considered to be one of the most active volcanoes in the world as well.

Past Pavlof Volcano Eruptions
The last two times the volcano erupted was on March and May of this year. The ashes reportedly reached as 40,000 ft high above sea level, PerfScience wrote. Many flights from passenger airlines had to cancel, and more than 3,000 travelers were affected.

Volcanic ash is dangerous for passenger aircrafts as it can cause engines to fail because of clogging. The heat from the engine can transform the scattered ash into hard glass and thus destroy the machinery. This is why Alaska airlines opt to cancel all flights when there are advisories posted as flying with ash spreading around can be risky.

Other Volcanoes Soon to Erupt as Well?
The Aleutian Arc in Alaska is composed of numerous active volcanoes, and it seems that the Pavlof Volcono is not the only one that's getting ready to erupt. Tech Times reported that Cleveland Volcano near the Chuginadak Island is having activities lately as well. Scientists observed magma movement beneath the icy ground.
