All Things Are Possible to Him Who Believes

Jesus said to him, ¡°If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.¡± Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, ¡°Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.¡±
Mark 9:23-24

The disciples had failed. They had been unable to set the boy free. While Jesus was on the Mount of Transfiguration, the disciples had wasted time arguing with the Pharisees. These unnecessary conversations robbed them of power. When Jesus arrived, the boy¡¯s father was totally confused and pleaded desperately, ¡°But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us¡± (verse 22). This challenged Jesus. If He could? He is the Word become flesh who came from heaven and dwelt among us. He is the light that shines in the darkness and overcomes it. Of course, He could help them!

Jesus could have answered, ¡°Do you not know who I am? Do you not know that I am the Messiah, the Son of God, the Savior of the world?¡± But He did not. Jesus went a step further. He wanted to show what faith could accomplish. Faith in God has no limits. For the believer, not only for Jesus, the possibilities are endless.

This father both believed and doubted. We are often in the same situation. Our faith has not yet developed to the degree that it copes with great challenges. We should not feel condemned for this. Jesus takes our faith as it is, develops it and causes it to grow stronger. In this instance Jesus wanted to show that there are no limits to how faith can grow and how much it can accomplish. Jesus helped the boy, set him free and restored him to health. In all our human weakness, God¡¯s power comes to our help. Faith is to come to Him and expect something from Him. When His power cuts in, miracles take place.
