6 Things to Know About the Shocking Allegations Concerning Obama, Hezbollah and Iran
4. Former Treasury official said administration feared "jeopardizing the nuclear deal"
In February of 2016, Katherine Bauer, an Obama-era Treasury Department official who served as a senior advisor on Iran in the department's Office of Terrorist Financing, provided testimony to the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
In her testimony, Bauer stated that the federal investigation into the subversive actions of Hezbollah were "tamped down" by the Obama administration for the purpose of securing a nuclear agreement with Iran, which was adopted in October 2015 and lifts sanctions against the Islamic Republic in exchange for a suspension of Iran's nuclear program.
"Under the Obama administration, however, these investigations were tamped down for fear of rocking the boat with Iran and jeopardizing the nuclear deal," Bauer wrote. "Now, the Trump administration should aggressively target Hezbollah's financial, logistical, and procurement networks, including resurrecting the DEA's now-defunct Project Cassandra."
As a result of the Obama administration's actions, Bauer said that Hezbollah operatives were not subject to arrests or indictments and also not blocked in their access to U.S. financial markets, according to Politico.
