Allen Iverson Offered $20,000 a Game to Play Indoor Soccer
Allen Iverson has been offered $20,000 a game to play indoor soccer as his chances for a revitalized NBA career looking bleak.
Allen Iverson, former NBA MVP and all-star, has been offered a contract by the Major Indoor Soccer League, according to msnbc.com. The deal includes a $20,000 paycheck per game and a $5,000 bonus for every goal he scores. On average, 12 goals are scored a game, according to Yahoo News.
The Rochester Lancers announced their interest in Iverson in a press release on Saturday.
"Allen Iverson is one of the premier athletes of our time," said Lancer's Vice President Rich Randall. "With his athleticism and competitive hunger, I think he can be a great fit with our team and fans as we make an important playoff push, while also driving interest to an exciting, growing sport."
The Lancers also offer merchandise bonuses and to accommodate Iverson's family and friends whenever they visit.
Iverson has expressed no interest in the Rochester Lancers, nor playing for the Major Indoor Soccer League. He has only mentioned possibly playing minor-league basketball in Puerto Rico. Iverson played basketball as well as football at Bethel High School in Virginia and there's no record of him ever playing soccer. It is speculated that the offer is a publicity stunt.
Allen Iverson is an 11-time NBA all-star and four-time scoring champion. According to Bleacher Report, Iverson's NBA comeback has been sad to watch. He is compared to the ousted NFL receiver, Terrell Owens.
"If he actually accepts the Lancers' offer, that will surely mark a sad end to his basketball career," wrote columnist, Ryan Rudnansky.
Iverson played for the Philadelphia 76ers, the Denver Nuggets and the Detroit Pistons. He is currently embroiled in a financial battle with a jewelry that is trying to collect nearly a million dollars from the former all-star.
A judge has ordered Iverson's wages garnished to pay off the $850,000 debt to the jeweler.
