To help in rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Katrina, Alpha Omega Publications will contribute funds and resources to support homeschooling and low-income families.
Alpha Omega Publications (AOP), an institution that provides services for Christian schools and homeschooling families, will give $1.2 million of its Switched-On Schoolhouse curriculum to victims of Hurricane Katrina, as well as 10 scholarships to the Alpha Omega Academy.
We know that many homeschooling families had their curricula destroyed by the storm, said Beth Te Grotenhuis, the Alpha Omega Publishers CEO. With all of the worries those families must have, we want to make sure that replacing their curricula isnt one of them.
Alpha Omega has long been committed to serving the homeschool community, and we are grateful that we have the ability to extend the hand of Christian brotherhood to families in need.
Switched-On Schoolhouse is an interactive computer-based curriculum that integrates Biblical material into its lessons. The curriculum, which includes courses on the Bible, History & Geography, Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science, is available for grades 3-12. Alpha Omega Academy offers education for elementary through high school students. Mail correspondence courses are available for grades K-12. An Online option uses the Switched-On Schoolhouse curriculum.
AOP hopes that the relief efforts will help expand the program to other families and churches to boost Christian education.
We also hope that families displaced by the storm who have been considering homeschooling will take advantage of our offer of free Switched-On Schoolhouse to get started, commented Te Grotenhuis.
Vice President of Sales for AOP, Lonnie Morgan, hopes that churches will take advantage of the software as well.
Because Switched-On Schoolhouse doesnt require faculty and allows students to progress at their own pace, it is easy for churches to use Switched-On Schoolhouse to set up Christian learning centers in their existing Sunday school facilities to help educate displaced and other children, said Morgan. We hope that churches will take advantage of this opportunity.
AOP will be assisted by Exodus Mandate, a group that advocates Christian education. Exodus Mandate and AOP are working with several homeschool organizations and church ministries to distribute the curricula and scholarships.
This is by far the single largest relief effort directed specifically at homeschool families, said the founder of Exodus Mandate, E. Ray Moore Jr. I am also particularly pleased that some of the Switched-On Schoolhouse curriculum is being earmarked for low income homeschool families.
