Amanda Knox Latest News: Prosecutor Giuliano Mignini Returns to Court as Defendant

The prosecutor in the Amanda Knox case, Giuliano Mignini, is scheduled to return to an appellate court later this month as a defendant.

Mignini became a controversial figure as the Amanda Knox trial and appeal went on; appearing to many to have a personal vendetta against Knox.

However, now Mignini finds himself on the defense – two years ago he was convicted of abuse of office in a separate case. He was originally sentenced to 16 months in prison, however, strangely he remains a free man and can even still act as a prosecutor in other cases until his appeal case is finalized.

According to CBS News, if the prosecutor’s appeal fails later this month he will have to step down from the prosecutor’s office. Even if that happens, it is expected he will make a further appeal to the Supreme Court in Italy.

Meredith Kercher was found dead of stab wounds, along with signs of sexual abuse, in her Perugia, Italy flat in 2007.

The court case concerning her murder garnered international attention when American foreign exchange student and roommate of Kercher, Amanda Knox, and Knox’s Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were accused of killing Kercher in a lascivious sex escapade gone awry.

Knox and Sollecito won their respective appeals of the 2007 murder, and they were released on Oct. 3.
