Amber Portwood 'Rebuilding Life' After Serving Time, Brother Says
"Teen Mom" Amber Portwood is quickly adjusting to life outside bars and working to reestablish a bond with daughter Leah, Portwood's brother Shawn said in a new interview. He described their reunion and their first night together, which was incredibly important to Portwood and her daughter.
"Their first night together, they spent all night talking, doing each other's hair and makeup and watching movies," Shawn told In Touch. "Leah fell asleep in the middle of a sentence! Amber wanted to show her that she was there when Leah woke up. She always told me that Leah was her inspiration to get out. She never wants to be in a position where she won't be there for Leah again."
Portwood is currently working on "rebuilding her life now." That includes building a relationship with Leah, whom she was only allowed to see five times during her incarceration. Portwood was supposed to be behind bars for five years but thanks to good behavior and her hard work in the institution, she was released earlier this month, after only serving one year.
Ex-boyfriend, and father of Leah, Gary Shirley is also back in Portwood's life, but only as the father of her daughter. Portwood has been clear that they are not reuniting any time soon and that she wants to focus on herself and staying sober.
"Her focus is college," Shawn said. "Then she wants to start her own drug rehabilitation program."
It's unknown whether Portwood will appear on MTV again, now that she is a free woman. The MTV cameras were there when she was released from the correctional facility in Indiana and the company flew in Shirley and daughter Leah for the emotional reunion. There may be a reunion special airing at some point on the channel that made her famous in the first place.
