America in Search of Nation's Most Exciting Church Choir

America’s on the search to find the most exciting church choir in a new reality television program.

NEW YORK – A Christian "American Idol" gave individuals an opportunity to present their divine voices in a reality show called "Gifted." Now, America’s on the search to find the most exciting church choir in a new reality television program.

"Voices of Joy" was launched nationwide yesterday and the competition is slated to hit 12 key markets, including New York, Los Angeles and New Orleans. This spring, church music groups are being encouraged to submit their voices on tape or DVD and enter the competition that will award half a million dollars to the winning group.

“‘Voices of Joy’ is more than just a competition for church groups; it is an inspirational reality show-based series of live events and television programs for the entire family," said Michael Ilitch, founder of Ilitch Holdings and "brainchild" of the new show, in a released announcement. "This interfaith program will not only showcase some of the country's most inspirational music, but it will give viewers of all creeds an opportunity to get to know some of the most outstanding personalities involved in America's church communities and follow their amazing stories."

Bringing in the next wave of reality television, “Voices of Joy” is based on hope, inspiration and entertainment for the family as it presents some of America's most inspirational voices.

“‘Voices of Joy’ is really an introduction to a missing link - something that is not now in a proper space," said the Rev. Floyd Flake, senior pastor of Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church. "People being able to have a voice, I think this is a space that needs to be filled."

The presentation of Christian music enthusiasm comes when Christian and Gospel music sales are the fastest growing genres today. Research shows that U.S. Gospel music sales have increased more than 80 percent in the last 10 years.

Amid the flourishing music sales, church choirs are called to submit three songs by May 15 from which applicants will be narrowed to eight groups. The selected church music groups, each of which will receive $25,000 in educational scholarships, will be invited to perform in front of a panel of judges and the viewing public throughout the nation. Voices of Joy will be nationally televised on a weekly basis this fall.
