American Bible Society to Supply All Habitat for Humanity Bibles

A renewed partnership with the American Bible Society will allow Habitat for Humanity to continue giving a Bible along with house keys to new homeowners.

NEW YORK – Since its founding in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has always given a Bible along with house keys to new homeowners. A renewed partnership with the American Bible Society will ensure that the Bibles keep coming, according to a recent announcement.

Since the hurricanes destroyed many homes in the U.S. Gulf Coast, Habitat for Humanity has been building new houses and shipping them down along with Bibles. The organization has provided than 200,000 families with affordable housing, and has built more than 51 houses for those affected by the hurricanes.

The New York-based American Bible Society has already provided families and charities with more than 850,000 Bibles since Hurricane Katrina smashed into the region early September. The Bible Society has sent another first shipment of 200 Bibles to Habitat and will continue to do so.

The two organizations have worked together in the past, and look forward to an expansion of their partnership.

“It is great for Habitat to be partnering once again with the American Bible Society,” said Rick Beech, director of Habitat's Church Relations, in a publicly released statement.

“Presenting a Bible at a house dedication is a holy moment, and it sends an important message that Habitat for Humanity is a Christian ministry," he said. "In donating each Bible, the American Bible Society becomes an integral ministry partner.”

In the release, Emilio A. Reyes, vice president of Domestic Ministries at the Bible Society said, “As these families resurrect their lives from the trials of poverty housing, they may also resurrect their spiritual lives through the Habitat Bible. We are honored to be a part of that.”

Bibles will be available in the Contemporary English Version and its Spanish equivalent. Other languages are available by request.

Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 200,000 houses in nearly 100 countries, providing simple, decent and affordable shelter for one million people.

The American Bible Society, founded in 1816, has as its mission to make the Bible available to every person in a language and format each can understand and afford so that all people may experience its life-changing message.
