'American Idol' News: Names of Top 51 Contestants Revealed After the Final Solo
The final 51 contestants were finally named during last night's episode of "American Idol."
The contestants had to sing their final solo performance during Hollywood week in front of the judges, and Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr., and Keith Urban had to decide who they will be sending in the Showcase round next week.
Last night started with less than a hundred singers, and many audition favorites continued to shine. The first performer was Stephany Negrete, who sang Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain." According to AmericanIdol.net, Negrete was kind of boring and predictable. The judges didn't provide her or any other contestants any feedback, so the contestants would have to wait until the judges deliver the news later.
The next contestants were Thomas Stringfellow, Avalon Young, and Olivia Rox. The website said that Stringfellow gave a solid performance, Young was "a bit off," while Rox was said to have "nailed" her original song.
John Wayne Shulz came next and sang "John 3:16" by Keith Urban, but the website said the song was not anything special. Even the judges agree that something's missing from the performance.
Next were MacKenzie Bourg, Shelby Z, Kory Wheeler, and James Dawson VIII. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Bourg was able to show the judges that he's comfortable on stage, while Shelby Z was definitely confident, despite singing the overly sang song "Alone" by Heart. Wheeler proved that his vocals are good, while James Dawson VIII proved that he has range and a lot of vocal control.
Tristan McIntosh was said to have given one of the best performances during the Final Solo round, and Sonika Vaid has proven that she's consistent by singing another solid performance. Lee Jean sang Shawn Mendes' "Stitches," and has proven that he has stage presence. Emily Brooke, CJ Johnson, Jeneve Rose Mitchell, and Daniel Rapattoni also gave memorable performances during their time on stage.
On the other hand, viewers also saw some of the contestants fumble last night. Malie Delgado, Mionne Destiny, and Jessica Cabral were all losing their voice, but still managed to deliver an okay performance. Sadly, Joshua Wicker, who sang "A Thousand Years" by Christina Perri, gave a not-so-impressive number, and while the two judges weren't impressed, Connick thinks he pulled it off.
Finally, the judges had to deliberate and separate the remaining contestants into three rooms. Room 1 made it through, and the singers in the room include Jordan Sasser, La'Porsha Renae, Shelby Z, Cabral, McIntosh, Bourg, and Jean. Room 3 also made it through, and some of the contestants in that room are Manny Torres, Michelle Marie, Jenn Blosil, Young, and Brooke. The eliminated contestants were in Room 2, and among those were Wicker and Schulz.
The Top 24 will be revealed tonight, Feb. 4, after they go through the Showcase Round.
