American Music Awards 2014 Performances: Selena Gomez Gets Emotional on Stage, Taylor Swift Comforts Selena After Performance

Sunday's American Music Awards celebrated the best and the brightest in the music industry and aside from the awards, the performances were also the highlight of the event.

Taylor Swift's opening number was a performance of her new single, "Blank Space." Swift was seen flirting with a number of her male dancers, then while holding a single rose, she appeared to point right at her ex-boyfriend, One Direction member Harry Styles. Then, Swift lit the rose on fire, and one of the dancers was blown off the stage.

Many are speculating that this is Swift's response to Styles denial about sending the singer 1,989 roses to celebrate her new album.

"Someone else did it, and I just got the credit," said Styles on the Ellen DeGeneres show last Friday.

Styles took the gesture in stride and appeared to be smirking, which was caught on camera.

Another number that got rave reviews was Selena Gomez's performance of "Heart Wants What It Wants." Gomez wore a pale pink gown, and the transforming backdrop enhanced her performance. At one point, thunder and lightning was flashing behind her, then during the bridge part of the song, angel wings appeared on the screen behind the singer. At the very end of her performance Gomez appeared to be overcome with emotion and was teary eyed, and many in the audience, including her good friend Taylor Swift, were in tears as well.

According to Hollywood Life, a source close to Gomez told the website that the singer knew that she would cry during the performance, because the song was an emotional one for her— not to mention that she just went through a dramatic and messy breakup with Justin Bieber.

After her performance, she joined Swift at the front row, and Gomez appeared to be comforted by her friend as well as Lorde and Karlie Kloss.

On Nov. 24, Swift took to Instagram to celebrate her friendship with Gomez. The photo was of the two stars hugging at the AMAs, and the two were in color while the rest of the people were in black and white. Swift captioned the photo, "The rest of the world was black and white, but we were in screaming color."
