Android 4.4 KiKat Update Rolling Out for Galaxy S2, Nexus 10, Galaxy S4 Mini and More
The Android 4.4 KitKat update could be rolling out for older devices such as the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket in the form of a new ROM.
A CyanogenMod team has been working to release this ROM known as CyanogenMod 11 or CM11. They recently provided more details on their website regarding the roll out of the software and what devices it would be available on.
"The source code for Android 4.4 began its release on October 31st," wrote the team. "From there, it took us roughly 4 days to get the code whipped up into shape and pushed up to our Github repository, with a manifest to match. This milestone also kicked off the bulk of the device bring-up efforts, and we are already seeing good results."
The team also revealed many of the devices it would be compatible with.
"Just to showcase a few: Xperia T, HTC One, S4 Mini, Galaxy Tab, Nexus 10, Skyrocket and many more (yes, including the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (12/13) and Nexus 5).
CM11 nightlies are expected to launch by the end of this month with an "unofficial alpha" started by "individual maintainers."
Android 4.4 KitKat was introduced by Google earlier this month alongside the brand new Nexus 5 smartphone.
The software is designed to be installed on a wide range of devices including older models that only have 512MB RAM.
"KitKat streamlines every major component to reduce memory use and introduces new APIs and tools to help you create innovative, responsive, memory-efficient applications," said Google on its developer's website.
The software is designed to protect system memory from apps consuming large amounts of RAM. Android will launch the services serially, or in small groups in order to avoid peak memory demands.
