The iPhone still remains the best-selling phone in the U.S., but with the Android system featured on many different handsets, it is not too difficult for Google’s system to bump ahead of Apple in users.

With so many devices running Google’s Android system, it is unlikely, with the flexibility of the tech company that Apple can ever surpass it just by featuring its system on one handset.

But with Apple’s former CEO Steve Jobs declaring that it was only looking to capture one percent of the mobile market share in the early iPhone days, the device is a great success and far exceeded that original goal.

For Android, this is a major success in “The War of the Smartphones.”

The “War” should heat up as Apple expands its territory by not only by releasing the forthcoming iPhone 5 on service carriers Verizon and AT&T, but now joining forces with Sprint in attempts to command a larger share of the mobile market.

This will be the biggest iPhone launch to date.

But Android also has a counterattack that will to launch as far as top of the line devices are concerned.

They plan on releasing the Samsung Galaxy S II, which will also be available on three networks including AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. Samsung is aiming at having the S II become the best selling Android handset.

The Nielson report also showed that 40 percent of all cell phones in the U.S. are smartphones which means that basic “feature phones” still cover a majority of the market.
