Both players progressed easily to the latter rounds of this year's tournament but were then severely tested in their reflective quarterfinals and semifinals. Both did fantastically well to avoid any upsets to make it through to this year's final, especially considering that this year Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova all exited early in dramatic upsets.

Murray needed five sets in his quarterfinal, coming back from two sets to love down to win through. In the semifinals he again needed to come back from behind to win in four sets to make his second straight Wimbledon final.

Meanwhile Djokovic took part in the longest men's singles semifinal in Wimbledon history, needing five sets to defeat Del Potro.

However, after their close encounters both players managed to make it through to the final many have been predicting even prior to the second week of the tournament commencing.

"Obviously these events are shown all around the world and there are hundreds of millions of people watching," Murray said ahead of this year's final."It's a bit strange when you think about it, so maybe it's best that I don't."When I look back at the end of my career I'll be satisfied that I trained as hard as I possibly could and gave myself the chance to compete against these guys."

Andy Murray's mum, Judy Murray, has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 live about her son's preparations for today: "This is what you play for, the big moments, the big occasions, the finals of Slams are what you play for. I didn't see him too much yesterday. He had a light hit with his hitting partner Danny Vallverdu, and he had a quiet dinner of roast chicken, vegetables and potatoes. He watched some boxing on TV last night, it was all very calm and quiet."

She added, "He's as calm as he could be, or he seemed to be. He knows what to expect, he has Ivan Lendl with him, he's been to eight Slam finals, they know what to do, so let's hope he can play his best tennis today."
