Andy Stanley talks politics ahead of 2020 election; 4 interesting takeaways
Love a political enemy ‘unconditionally’
During the first sermon of the series, preached Jan. 12, Stanley implored his congregation to “look for an opportunity to love unconditionally someone with whom you disagree politically.”
“You’re like ‘well, I don’t even know anybody I disagree with politically,’” said Stanley, getting some laughter from the congregation. “That’s a problem, OK?”
“That’s why you haven’t learned anything in 15 years. That’s why you’re so convinced you’re right, you just can’t understand.”
Stanley said that when someone says “I can’t understand how anybody could believe that,” they are confessing that “there’s something you don’t understand.”
He acknowledged that finding someone politically different to love unconditionally “may be harder than it normally is because we’re more divided than we’ve ever been.”
However, he added, “when you find somebody that you can serve and love unconditionally, your light’s going to shine a little bit brighter because we’ve so divided.”
