The "Maleficent" star, 38, appears dressed in head-to-toe black Saint Laurent wear and candidly poses wide-eyed with one knee raised. Jolie teamed up with Saint Laurent's Hedi Slimane for the shoot and spoke with Elle's deputy editor Maggie Bullock in the candid interview.
Jolie, who was once portrayed in the media as a rebellious sex symbol with a penchant for bad boys, has blossomed over the years into a respected actress, philanthropist and mother of six. She recounted her twenties and the life lessons she gained.
"[The tumult of my twenties] was misinterpreted as [me] wanting to be rebellious," Jolie told Bullock.
"And in fact it wasn't a need to be destructive or rebellious— it's that need to find a full voice, to push open the walls around you. You want to be free," she explained. "And as you start to feel that you are being corralled into a certain life, you kind of push against it. It may come out very strange, it may be interpreted wrong, but you're trying to find out who you are."
The academy award-winning actress is also a goodwill ambassador for the UN's refugee agency and she has recently been at the forefront of a campaign in Bosnia designed to end sexual violence against women in war.
In February 2013 she underwent a preventive double mastectomy after learning she had an 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer due to the BRCA1 gene. She also has a 50 percent chance of developing ovarian cancer and is scheduled to undergo another procedure.
Despite her brave ordeal, Jolie is more passionate about life than ever before.
"I realized that very young— that a life where you don't live to your full potential, or you don't experiment, or you're afraid, or you hesitate, or there are things you know you should do but you just don't get around to them, is a life that I'd be miserable living," she said.
"The only way to feel that I'm on the right path is just to be true to myself, whatever that may be, and that tends to come with stepping out of something that's maybe safe or traditional," she explained.
Jolie spoke about her 9-year relationship with Pitt, 50, with whom she shares six children Maddox, 12, Pax, 10, Zahara, 9, Shiloh, 7, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 5. The couple began dating in 2005 after meeting on the set of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" and they announced their engagement in 2012.
"We have a very full life and a very passionate relationship. We are still quite surprised that we're actually more interested in each other now than when we met. We know it's rare," she said.
"You get together and you're two individuals and you feel inspired by each other, you challenge each other, you complement each other, drive each other beautifully crazy," she continued. "After all these years, we have history— and when you have history with somebody, you're friends in such a very real, deep way that there's such a comfort, and an ease, and a deep love that comes from having been through quite a lot together."
