Anne Hathaway, 'Barbie' Live-Action: Where and When Will Filming Start?

Will Anne Hathaway begin work on the "Barbie" live-action adaptation? It's been months since the announcement of the project from Sony and pre-production has been slowly taking place.

The "Barbie" live-action film originally had a September filming date. Production reportedly planned to begin work in Atlanta before moving principal photography overseas.

Location scouts are also apparently looking to film the rest of the movie in Gold Coast, Australia but a confirmed production date has not been set. Sources said that the project remains on the table, while Sony confirms the deal with Hathaway and Australian director Aletha Jones.

Mattel CEO Richard Dickson tapped the studio to develop the "Barbie" movie after mulling on a live-action iteration for years. In July, Sony approached Hathaway to play the iconic Mattel doll after Amy Schumer dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Sony hired Diablo Cody to rewrite the original script from an earlier draft from Jenny Bicks. The executives wanted the film to tackle female empowerment, acceptance and contentment.

The movie will delve on Barbie leaving Barbieland after feeling she doesn't fit the mold and expectations. As Barbie tries to navigate out of her comfort zone, however, she gains insights and realization about herself and the world.

Hathaway has had a busy year filming "Ocean's 8" with Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, "Serenity" with Matthew McConaughey, and "Nasty Women" with Rebel Wilson. She'll roughly have the same packed schedule in 2018 as she's set to work on the sci-fi movie "O2" and the survival legal drama "The Lifeboat" in 2018, aside from "Barbie."

In between work, the actress is also raising a toddler with husband Adam Schulman. The couple, who tied the knot in 2012, welcomed their first child, Jonathan, in March 2016. Even while pregnant, Hathaway did not stop working.

"The night shoots were hard for me," the actress said. "Usually, the way I approach my character, I like to get pretty extreme physically and I couldn't do that on this one, so it was a bit of an adjustment," Hathaway stated, adding that her life became simpler and easier when Jonathan came.
