Apple iPhone 7 vs Sony Xperia XZ: Which Smartphone Has the Better Battery Life?

Coming from one of the biggest smartphone makers, the iPhone 7 has probably gotten more attention than the Sony Xperia XZ since their announcements both happened in September 2016. However, learning about the difference in their battery performance might prove that Sony's smartphone also has an edge over the iPhone 7.

Right off the specification sheets, people will notice a big difference in favor of Sony Xperia XZ that packs a non-removable Lithium-ion battery with 2,900-milliampere hour power compared to the iPhone 7's 1,960 mAh.

However, earlier battery and performance tests reported interesting results giving each smartphone an advantage in one department or another.

The 2,900 mAh battery pack is one of the most common specs found in several Android phones today. For comparison, even the Samsung Galaxy S7 does not go far from the numbers with a 3,000 mAh battery and that level of battery capacity seems to be working great.

As for the Sony Xperia XZ, GSMArena previously reported that the smartphone had a 72-hour endurance rating on their battery test.

The performance test report shared that the device was outstanding in the 3G talk time department with 23 hours and 39 minutes of endurance recorded, noting that it is just an hour less than how Samsung Galaxy S7 performed.

In terms of web browsing through its Wi-Fi connection, the Sony Xperia XZ lasted for nine hours and four minutes. GSMArena noted that it was not as "spectacular" as others but it is still a good rate.

To test the handset in terms of video playback, GSMArena had a video played on loop where Sony Xperia XZ reportedly lasted eight hours and 35 minutes.

On the other hand, in a separate battery test, the iPhone 7 also had its highs and lows. While it might be easily assumed that it will perform less than the Sony Xperia XZ did, the iPhone 7 still posed an advantage over some areas.

There is no question that Sony gets the point in terms of 3G talk time as GSMArena only recorded 11 hours and 25 minutes of call endurance on the iPhone 7.

However, Apple's latest smartphone surpasses the Sony Xperia XZ in the web browsing and video playback departments. With the same mechanisms of battery testing, the iPhone 7 lasted 11 hours and 45 minutes of web browsing and nine hours and 15 minutes of video playback. All in all, the iPhone 7 had a 61-hour endurance rating from GSMArena.
