macOS Sierra 10.12.4 Update Brings Night Shift Feature

Apple has just released the macOS 10.12.4 update last Monday, bringing new features along with the usual bug fixes, performance improvements and security enhancements. The fourth major update for Sierra since its September launch, this patch also brings over the Night Shift feature from the iOS.

The Night Shift feature, originally introduced in the iOS 9.3 last year, makes small adjustments to the color of the screen aimed at helping users sleep well after using their laptop or desktop, according to Ars Technica. The Night Shift gives the option to automatically reduce cooler, bluish tones and add warmer yellow tones to the images on the device screen after night falls in the user's locale.

A similar feature has also been added to Google's Android 7 Nougat, and Microsoft is also planning to include its own version of the feature in the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update. Third-party apps like f.lux have served this feature before they became standard on the Android and iOS.

The new feature is meant to activate on a preset schedule, but users can also have their own time settings for Night Shift, as well as the option to activate the color shifts manually. Furthermore, the extent by which Night Shift will adjust the screen picture can also be controlled from the new Night Shift control panel.

Other features that have rolled out with the macOS Sierra 10.12.4 comprise a short list — this new update is a somewhat minor refresh compared with earlier updates released by Apple for the operating system. These new features include an added Siri support for "cricket scores, schedules, and player rosters from the Indian Premier League and International Cricket Council," dictation support for Shanghainese, and improved right-to-left language support of the Touch Barm toolbar, and visual tab picker for the built-in Safari browser, according to Digital Trends.

Minor fixes to Portable Document Format viewing, added support for more RAW formats from digital cameras, and improvements, bug fixes for the Mail app round up the list of notable updates for the new macOS Sierra update.
