Mac Pro 2017: Apple to Rethink Mac Pro, Will Develop New Model

Apple has to go back to the drawing board when it comes to the Mac Pro, the company almost admits. With its last iteration having come out all the way back in 2013, Apple enthusiasts would think that the Mac Pro is long overdue for an upgrade. Instead, the company is talking about "something great to replace it."

Usually, when the Cupertino-based consumer electronics giant calls for a meeting with tech journalists, it is with the intent of announcing another device or unveiling a software update. Not this time — Apple senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller spoke to a select group of reporters in a facility near the Apple headquarters.

The purpose of the gathering was not readily apparent to Tech Crunch and the other few tech writers fortunate enough to be included in the low key and somewhat irregular Apple media meeting.

To sum up the meeting, Apple has basically decided that the Mac Pro, first launched in 2013, is not something that leads itself to further development. The company has more or less stalled when it comes to updating the small form-factor home computer that was originally aimed at professional users.

The company has been so taken aback even by their own lack of progress when it comes to the Mac Pro that their statement came out as something like an apology, at least the way The Verge sees it. Along the way, they announced that a new Mac Pro is coming.

Schiller has reiterated that Apple sees the Mac as one of its priorities, even as the iPhone, the iPad and other iOS devices have been stealing the limelight for several years now. "The Mac has an important, long future at Apple, that Apple cares deeply about the Mac, we have every intention to keep going and investing in the Mac," said Schiller, emphasizing how the company feels about the Mac line.

"If we've had a pause in upgrades and updates, we're sorry for that — what happened with the Mac Pro — and we're going to come out with something great to replace it," Schiller said.
