'Aquaman' Release Date News, Updates: Release Date Set on Oct. 5, 2018
The first solo outing on the big screen of DC's "Aquaman" is slated for Oct. 5, 2018, which is still a lengthy 20 months away. It won't be long, however, before fans could get their first peek as the preproduction of the upcoming movie is already underway.
For fans of Jason Momoa, better known as Khal Drogo in HBO's medieval fantasy "Game of Thrones," his Arthur Curry look has already been revealed last year in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." Those looking for more than an incidental glimpse of the undersea king can catch him later this year in "Justice League." Digital Spy has all the details.
His "Justice League" role, in the movie that first confirmed Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, will have him joining the rest of the DC heroes: Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Godot), Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher).
Joining Momoa's Arthur Curry will be Mera, underwater princess and Aquaman's love interest, as played by Amber Heard. Mera will be showing up first in "Justice League" as well to make her character debut. Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Atlantean and Aquaman's ally, will appear in both films too.
There have been reports of Nicole Kidman being considered for the role of Atlanna, Aquaman's Atlantean mother. Temuera Morrison, who played Jango Fett in "Star Wars," is also in the list of possible actors for Aquaman's human father, Thomas Curry.
The movie will be filming with horror director James Wan at the helm. Wan has previously directed "The Fast and the Furious 7," "The Conjuring," "Insidious" and "Saw."
While it is not yet known how Wan's adaptation will adhere to the original story, the basic outline is simple. Arthur is born to simple lighthouse keeper Thomas Curry and an enigmatic lady named Atlanna. Arthur's mother will seemingly die after some time, but before she departs, she reveals her royal lineage from the kingdom of Atlantis.
Arthur Curry soon discovers his abilities — underwater breathing, superhuman strength and durability, and of course the ability to communicate with underwater creatures.
Director Wan has said of the character: "I think Aquaman is a character that a lot of people have made fun of over the years, and I just think it's fun to actually show a really different, cool, badass side to this character. But at the same time, let's not forget to have fun with it."
