Arizona Cardinals NFL Trade Rumors: Johnson Out for Two, Three Months; Humphries to Miss One to Two Games
The Arizona Cardinals finally have a timetable for David Johnson's return. And it doesn't look good.
ESPN's Adam Schefter has reported that the 2016 first-team All-Pro running back will undergo wrist surgery this week and he's expected to be put on the shelf for two to three months. Schefter added that the Cardinals will place Johnson on the injured reserve list, but he will get the chance to return to the active roster once he's healthy.
"It's always a huge blow to lose a top player. But it's not the end of the world. We've got quality guys on our team, and it's an opportunity for somebody to step up. David Johnson became David Johnson because of somebody's injury," Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said, via AZCentral.com.
Meanwhile, D.J. Humphries' injury has been overlooked because of the damage on Johnson's wrist, but the offensive tackle is also going to miss a week or two of action because of a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury in his right knee.
With Humphries recuperating, the Cardinals can move Jared Veldheer back to left tackle, but Arians wants John Wetzel to play at the position in spite of the fact he struggled during the game against the Detroit Lions last Sunday.
"Wetzel plays left better than right. So, we'll probably stick to where we are right now. It does not look to be any kind of long-term injury," Arians said, via the Cardinals' official website.
"Wetzel didn't do his job as well as he normally does. I'm sure he'll bounce back," he added.
Arians noted that they would have moved Veldheer to left tackle if Humphries' injury was long-term. But since he's expected to return in a week or two, Wetzel would continue to fill in for Humphries at the position.
In any case, Wetzel should play better this Sunday since he's getting a full weeks practice at left tackle.
