Arizona Man Wakes Up From Coma in 'Christmas Miracle'
An Arizona man, whose life was thought to be over by doctors, miraculously woke up from his comatose state and raised two fingers for his doctor in what people are hailing a “Christmas miracle.”
Sam Schmid, a 21-year-old University of Arizona college student was critically injured this past October in a five-car accident in Tucson, Ariz.
Schmid lost his roommate and another friend during the horrific accident and suffered severe head trauma as a result of the crash.
His head injuries were so grave that Schimd could not be treated at the local hospital and was transported to the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Phoenix. Doctors at the institute feared that the college student was brain dead and had begun preparing his family for the worst.
Schmid was unresponsive for several days following surgery and doctors were preparing to take him off life support when Schmid miraculously woke up, according to ABC News.
“I tell everyone, if they want to call it a modern-day miracle, this is a miracle,” Schmid’s mother Susan Regan told ABC News.
Regan added that the miraculous recovery, just in time for the holidays, has prompted some close friends to reconsider their beliefs.
“I have friends who are atheists who have called me and said, ‘I am going back to church,’” Regan said.
Even Schmid’s doctor found the recovery of the college student to be a true miracle.
“I am dumb-founded with his incredible recovery in such a short time,” said Dr. Robert Spetzler.
Spetzler is a world-renowned neurosurgeon who operated on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords following her nearly fatal attack in the beginning of 2011.
Although currently in a wheelchair, doctors say that Schmid could make a full recovery.
