Arlo Guthrie's Wife Dead at 68: 'Alice's Restaurant' Singer Grieves on Facbebook

Folk singer Arlo Guthrie has announced that he will postpone upcoming concert dates following the death of his wife.

Alro Guthrie relayed his grief on Facebook over the weekend, after saying goodbye to his wife of 43 years. Jackie Guthrie, 68, died Sunday after suffering from inoperable liver cancer. Arlo described his wife as his one great love in a Facebook note dedicated to her memory.

"There are loves, and there are LOVES. Ours was and will continue to be what it has always been - A very great love," Guthrie wrote. "We didn't always like each other. From time to time there were moments when we'd have our bags packed by the door. But, there was this great love that we shared from the moment we met - a recognition - It's YOU! And we would always return to it year after year, decade after decade and I believe life after lifetime."

Arlo Guthrie's legacy extends back to his father, Woody Guthrie. Both folk artists became well known among certain communities for writing long songs about stories of social injustice.

Arlo Guthrie's most popular song, "Alice's Restaurant Massacree," was widely played on college radios during the 1960's. The 18-minute song comments on the "stupidities" of people during the Vietnam War.

Guthrie announced that he would delay the upcoming shows to take time to grieve.

"I've had to cancel and postpone a few shows coming up. I will make them up as soon as possible," he stated. "The tour will begin with the gigs scheduled for Canada, and I will move ahead through the rest of whatever happens next."

Guthrie announced his wife's death on Sunday, adding that she had been at peace when she died.

"She was at peace with the life and dreams we shared together for almost 45 years," he wrote.

Jackie Guthrie is survived by four children and 10 grandchildren.
