'Arrow' Series News: Katie Cassidy on Death of Black Canary
After months of guessing game, fans of "Arrow" finally got the news that they had been waiting for when the latest episode featured the death of Katie Cassidy's character, Laurel Lance, aka Black Canary. However, saddening as it may be, for Cassidy, the move to kill her character is no reason for her to hold a grudge as it makes creative sense to her.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cassidy said that, while she is sad that she will no longer be on the show that she had been a part of for four and a half years, she fully understands why her character had to be killed off.
"That part is certainly sad. Again, I was okay with it. We all came to an understanding that this was what was going to happen. I think the shock value is good. It's such a jolt and such a turn in the story that it gives the [writers] so much more to do and places to go with it. Otherwise I feel like shows can get stale," Cassidy said.
In the just-concluded episode, Damien Darhk successfully executes his plan to escape prison despite the attempt of the Green Arrow team to stop him. When Oliver Queen attempts to kill Damien with his arrow, the latter, thanks to the newfound ability he got from the idol, uses it to stab Laurel Lance in the stomach.
Oliver carries his ex-flame to the hospital where the doctors are able to stabilize her condition. During her lucid moments, she tells Oliver to do everything he can to win back Felicity. However, because of the excessive blood loss, she finally succumbs to death even before her father arrives.
Nonetheless, Cassidy is still looking forward to the days when she will don the Black Canary costume once more. And this is not a far cry from reality as executive producer Marc Guggenheim said that she will return to "Arrow" for flashback scenes.
Apart from the flashback scenes, the upcoming finale episode of "The Flash" will also feature Cassidy as the Black Canary from Earth 2, who will be known as Black Siren. It is an unclear, though, if the character will be an ally or a foe.
