Bringing attention to the Church's largest discipleship ministry, the Assemblies of God USA recognizes today, Sept. 25, as National Sunday School Day.
According to the Assemblies of God, 66 million people across the nation study Scripture in Sunday school. In the Assemblies of God alone, over 120,000 people volunteer to teach Bible study lessons to over one million people every week.
A Barna Group study taken earlier this year found that churches continue to rely on Sunday school. It reported that 96 percent of Protestant churches offer a Sunday school where people receive some form of Bible instruction in a class setting.
As Sunday school remains one of the most stable aspects in the religious sphere, the Assemblies of God noted how the traditional Bible study program has begun to adopt change for a more culturally relevant experience. Such conformities have taken away from the importance of indoctrination, according to the Assemblies of God.
Sticking to the traditional art of Bible storytelling, the Assemblies of God gives priority to Bible teaching before any cultural values.
"In order for Sunday School to remain effective in the 21st century, the Church must both reaffirm and retain the essential elements of this disciple-making strategy while also developing flexibility to address the diverse discipling challenges of our fast-paced, pluralistic culture," stated the church body.
As Sunday school has proven its effectiveness in the teachings of biblical principles and godly living to the young and old, the Assemblies of God makes efforts to promote Sunday school and those who invest their time and energy in teaching through such days as Teacher of the Year, Cradle Roll Day and National Sunday School Day.
