Atlanta Falcons NFL Trade Rumors: Desmond Trufant Close to Finalizing Deal With Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons came so close to the grand price, but it was not meant to be. The team let the title slip right through their fingers, but they will be back and they are going to make sure they keep one of their key players.

One of the Falcons' top priorities this offseason was to sign cornerback Desmond Trufant to a long-term contract, and it looks like they're not wasting any time getting a deal done. According to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, negotiations are going well and the Falcons are getting close to finalizing Trufant's new contract.

The cornerback will reportedly get $12 million to $14 million per season with his new contract. This will make him of the highest-paid cornerback in the National Football League (NFL).

Trufant is entering the 2017 season on the fifth-year of his rookie contract. He will earn $8.026 million. He played really well last year. However, he was sidelined with a torn pectoral muscle just nine games into the season. He missed the Falcons playoff run and he should help the team return to the big game next season. Providing he's healthy, of course.

Trufant should cover the opposing team's best receiver if he has fully recovered from his injury. Last month, he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he should be back by May. "I should be. We will see how it goes. The training staff, they've got a plan for me. I'm just following that. I know that when it's time for that first game, I'm going to be better," Trufant said during the interview.

The Falcons selected Trufant with the 22nd overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft and he has been a starter for the team since his rookie season. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2015, his third season in the league.
