AT&T 4G LTE Network Activated in New York City Prematurely (PHOTO)
A Christian Post staffer recently gained access to AT&T’s 4G LTE in New York City.
A 4G LTE compatible Samsung Galaxy S2 led to the discovery when it was observed that the smartphone was connecting to 4G LTE; the icon that normally reads 4G was now displaying LTE underneath – this can be seen in the picture.
The Christian Post can also confirm that the smartphone was able to browse the Internet at much faster speeds consistent with LTE’s capabilities.
AT&T has not released any statement concerning its LTE network arriving in the Big Apple, so this incident could be the result of the company performing tests.
CP contacted AT&T that told the publication that 4G LTE connections were not available within a 25 mile radius from The Christian Post’s New York office location in the financial district of Manhattan.
This makes gaining access to the network a rare occurrence.
AT&T’s Senior Vice President Larry Solomon made an announcement earlier this month concerning 4G LTE officially coming to New York City.
Solomon suggested that it would be arriving soon, but he did not mention anything about this month.
AT&T recently began testing the new Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and the HTC Vivid, both 4G LTE smartphones, in New York City earlier this month even though the networks have not arrived yet.
The iPhone 5 is also expected to be a 4G LTE device when and if it is released next year.
AT&T also mentioned in the past that the company plans to cover 70 million customers in LTE by the end of this year. To reach that goal, New York City would have to be in the plans due to its large population.
Both the HTC Vivid and Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket are available through AT&T and currently work on normal 4G speeds in NYC.
