'Atypical' Renewed by Netflix for Season 2
"Atypical" has not only been renewed for a second season, Netflix has also ordered a longer run for the drama series that deals with autism and coming of age.
Fresh from its eight-season premiere run, "Atypical" has been quickly approved for a sophomore run by Netflix. This time, the streaming service has commissioned ten episodes for season 2, a longer run than the first, as reported by Deadline.
Robia Rashid pulls multiple duties as creator, writer and executive producer of the show, sharing production duties with director Seth Gordon. The first episode of "Atypical" aired on Aug. 11 to positive reception.
"Atypical" follows the life of Sam (Keir Gilchrist) as seen through the unusual mindset of the 18-year old. Sam looks to be the typical high-school boy, just belatedly taking an interest to girls and dating, as he tries to sort out his place at home and school even as he is on the autistic spectrum.
It's not just Sam who has to constantly adjust. His mother Elsa (Jennifer Jason Leigh) struggles with learning to let go as the teen starts to yearn for independence. There's also his father Doug (Michael Rapaport) who only wants to understand his son better, in order to connect with him on the level he would like to.
Sam tries to learn how to fit in, with more than a little help from his sister Casey (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and his therapist Julia (Amy Okuda).
The first season ends with Sam reconciling with Paige (Jenna Boyd) after he dives into a pool despite his neurosis. With him and Paige out of a relationship for now, and Julia possibly quitting from being his therapist, who will Sam turn to now in the new season?
The video below shows a few scenes in the life of Sam, as he tries to fit in and find love while dealing with his autism-related issues.
