Audi Plans All-Electric Line-Up by 2030 With Aggressive Electrification Strategy

It may be a mandate from Volkswagen, its parent company, that led Audi to mark 2030 as the deadline for their ambitious plan to electrify every model in their line-up. Even then, the company has come up with its own way of getting a head start to electric vehicles and autonomous driving.

The company's almost single-minded pursuit of the next wave of automotive technology is well evident in the Audi A8, as Digital Trends noted. The company may have already come up with autonomous driving that's a notch higher than its rivals, but there are more problems to solve.

Volkswagen first announced their grand plan to build electric vehicles of all the models in the 12 car brands under their umbrella, as the company Chief Executive Officer Matthias Mueller revealed at the Frankfurt auto show in early September.

"The transformation in our industry is unstoppable. And we will lead that transformation," he said, referring to the dozen brands in their line-up that includes Audi. It could also be their response to the upstart Tesla and the Model 3, as Bloomberg noted.

Audi does not need further encouragement, though. "We are prepared. [The announcement] doesn't mean any change for Audi, we are absolutely on track," Peter Mertens, a board member for the company's technical development, said in an earlier interview.

The brand is starting as early as next year, by putting out an electrified crossover that they can pit against the Tesla Model X. The company will not be taking a break after that, too, as they get ready to come up with a sportier model right after.

"Shortly after that we're going to have battery-electric vehicles one after the other, cranking out a lot of vehicles," Mertens confirmed. At this rate, the company might just be able to electrify every model they have in about 13 years.
