Australian Anglican Director to Oversee Decennial Lambeth Commission
An Australian Anglican woman has been appointed as the manager to the Lambeth Conference 2008, on January 12, 2004. Sue Parks, director of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, has the overall responsibility for the conferences planning and organization.
In a brief interview with the Anglican Communion News Service, Sue Parks, 55, explained that she is thrilled to take part in the decennial celebration.
"My abiding memory of the 1998 conference is the vibrant worship that took place, reflecting the many different backgrounds and cultures encompassed by the Communion," she said. "I am really looking forward to working with people from across the Anglican Communion and putting into practice my experience of the Church worldwide to ensure the smooth running of this 2008 conference."
The Lambeth Conference draws together the bishops of the worldwide Anglican Communion, normally once every decade; the last conference took place in 1998.
South Africa was first suggested as the location for the 2008 conference the 14th of such gatherings in Anglican history. However, because of the ongoing North-South dispute over homosexuality within the worldwide communion and because of the high cost of holding the gathering outside of the traditional city of Canterbury, the Archbishop of Canterbury decided to move the event back to England.
The Conference takes its name from the first meeting, which was convened at Lambeth Palace by Archbishop Longley in 1867.
