'Avatar 2' Release Date Delay News: Moved to December 2017, James Cameron Explains

Fans of the epic science fiction "Avatar" will have to wait for another one full year until the release of its sequel as Fox Chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos confirmed to that the released date of "Avatar 2" has been moved to December 2017.

The sequel was originally slated to be released in 2016, but plans have changed when critically-acclaimed producer, writer, and director James Cameron decided to take his time in making a great movie, perhaps even aiming to surpass the feat of "Avatar" when it was debuted in 2009. Gianopulos told Variety that Cameron "has his own pace." He also expects the first one will be followed by two subsequent films in 2018 and 2019.

Fans will need not to be frustrated though, because the delay in the release of "Avatar 2" could really be worth it. Cameron just recently revealed in an interview with Coming Soon that he and his team is currently focusing on creating graphics for the ocean ecosystem of Pandora. The production team will then start filming underwater oceanographic exploration for "Avatar 2" and "Avatar 3" as soon as the graphics have been completed. He also shared other factors that concerns him.

"The fact that we're basically overfishing, climate change … a few degrees of temperature rise are gonna basically take out the coral reefs. All those beautiful images of the coral environments we all grew up with won't exist in 50 years at the rate we're going in terms of pumping greenhouse gases into the environment. These are the things that concern me," said the acclaimed director.

Cameron is directing from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The cast will include Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Sam Worthington. The three sequels are reported to be filmed all together. And assuming that there will be no more delays, Avatar 2 will be released on Dec. 25, 2017, followed by Avatar 3 in December 2018, and Avatar 4 in December 2019.
