'Avatar' Movie News: Movie's Sequels to Take on 'Star Wars' at the Box Office?

James Cameron has announced that he is planning to shoot four "Avatar" movies concurrently. The director of one of the most record-breaking movies of all time, "Avatar" divulged this piece of news to Famous Monsters of Filmland, following his announcement at the CinemaCon that he is planning to work on four "Avatar" sequels.

"It's more the way you would shoot a miniseries… so we'll be shooting across all [Avatar scripts] simultaneously. So Monday I might be doing a scene from Movie 4, and Tuesday I'm doing a scene from Movie 1. … We're working across, essentially, eight hours of story," he told the Famous Monsters.

However, as Cameron announced that the sequels will be released at Christmastime in 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023, many noted that it seems inevitable for his upcoming "Avatar" movies to go heads on with upcoming "Star Wars" sequels, too, as their showing dates are around the same time. However, Cameron said that, in order to avoid the clash, he is willing to change the showing dates of his "Avatar" sequels. For him, going heads on with "Star Wars" would be a stupid move, and he hopes that "Star Wars" won't choose to go heads on with his "Avatar" films, too.

"My original plan was to release them a year apart, but we're opening up. If for no other reason than that I don't want to land on the same date as one of the Star Wars sequels. That wouldn't be fair to them," he said in a jest.

Currently, Cameron's "Avatar," which was shown in 2009, holds the record of the highest-grossing movie of all time as it made more than $2.7 billion worldwide. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," on the other hand, raked in a little more than $ 2 billion for its global ticket sales, making it the third highest-grossing film of all time.

With the impressive box-office records of both movies, there is no denying that both have indisputable power to attract audiences. In the event that a future "Star Wars" movie is pitted directly against "Avatar," despite Cameron's wish that it won't happen, only by then it will be settled as to which among the two is more supreme at the box office.
