'Awkward' season 5 recap & update: Jenna becomes popular, Matty is 'invisible'
What could be more awkward than Jenna Hamilton (Ashley Rickards) taking the popular spot and Matty McKibben (Beau Mirchoff) becoming invisible to the school populace? That's right. The tables have turned around in "Awkward" and it's not good—at least for Matty.
In Season 5 Episode 3 of "Awkward," Jenna instantly became popular because of a very surprising turnout of events in the previous episode. She accidentally spilled water on the circuit breaker and instead of being reprimanded, she became the new campus hero. Her careless action led to a blackout in school which led the administration to cancel classes and give students the rest of the day off. The senior class then decided to head over to the beach for a party.
And that's how Jenna climbed up the ladder of popularity. In the "Jenna in Wonderland" episode, people are smiling at her, instant messaging her and even taking a selfie with her. But while Jenna is enjoying her new school status, Matty's popularity level is going down. According to Entertainment Weekly's recap, a drunk Matty was filmed being a total jerk to Jake who apologized about the whole Gabby thing. The video went viral, bringing down Matty's reputation.
When he tried to hit on a cute girl, he was ignored. He was the last person to be picked at gym class and he got a bad slice of pizza at the cafeteria. He tells Jenna about his weird day, thinking he's invisible. But he tells her the truth about no longer being the "it" guy. She sympathizes with him for a while but eventually had to leave him to enjoy the benefits of being known. She goes on a triple date with the Julies and some college boys wherein she later realized how boring they were. She decided to ditch the "cool kids" to grab some pizza with Tamara (Jillian Rose Reed). While all of that happened, Matty was doing some "unpopular" tutorial with Kyle and Leroy. They bring him to a rock show where he had a good time.
Apparently, Jenna's social status won't last long. She realizes that she wouldn't trade anything to get to the top. On the fourth episode of the show, Hollywood Hills hints that Jenna is going to be depressed over her senior superlative. She is voted "Most Disappointing" out of her entire class and she's definitely not happy about it.
Awkward Season 5 Episode 4 airs Monday, Sept. 21 at 9/8C on MTV.
