Baby Comes Back to Life After 10 Hours in the Morgue, Parents Name Her 'Miracles'

Parents have named their newborn baby "Miracles" after she came back to life 10 hours after being declared medically dead and being sent to the morgue in the Colombian state of Choco last week.

The child was born prematurely in the early hours of Wednesday, Nov. 13 to mother Jenny Hurtado, who was only 27 weeks pregnant with the baby when she was rushed to a hospital in Quidbo, Choco and given an emergency C-section to deliver the infant. Just 35 minutes later, without finding any signs of life, doctors declared the infant dead.

The premature baby was then taken to the local morgue where she was stored in a small box until her father, a fisherman coming home from sea, could come pick her up and begin making funeral preparations. When the father arrived at the morgue 10 hours later to retrieve the infant's body, he and morgue staff members noticed signs of life, including movement and muffled cries from within the box.

Dr. Javier Zagarra, a specialist in premature birth, told the local Semana newspaper that sometimes a premature infant's heart palpitations are not strong enough to be detected when it's first born, but they can then become stronger after the infant is wrapped in a warm blanket, an explanation that may prove why the baby was revived after it was wrapped in a box.

"In some cases the heart movements are not perceptible even though the newborn is alive, they can declare it dead," Zagarra told the Semana news source. "When they wrap the baby in a sheet, upon receiving warmth the baby can then revitalize," he added.

The infant's doctor Farid Vieira, who initially delivered the baby at the San Francisco de Asis hospital at 2:45 a.m., had initially said the child's lungs were too underdeveloped for it to live, even after life-saving surgery was performed. However, after the father and the morgue worker discovered that the child was displaying signs of life, she was moved to the Santa Teresita del Niño Jesus clinic in the capital of Bogota for further evaluation.

The parents have chosen to name the newborn girl "Miraglos," which translated means "Miracles" - a reference to her amazing birth.

In another unbelievable story, a baby came back to life earlier this year in Brazil after she was placed on top of a church altar. The baby had died after being born prematurely at 2.6 pounds, but the parents asked that the infant be sent to the local church before the morgue for a final prayer. The child was placed upon the altar and came alive three hours after initially being declared dead.
