Baby Dies After Being Left in a Car at Church

A minister of music, who says he was in a hurry this past Sunday, was met with tragic news. His three-month-old baby died after being left in a car at church in temperatures that reached 90 degrees.

Norman Collins Jr., the baby’s father, said when he and his wife, who sings in the choir, pulled up to Real Faith Christian Church in Clarksdale, Miss., on Sunday, they were running late, so as he exited his vehicle Collins asked a fellow church member to take the baby inside to daycare.

Later he learned the person did not hear him.

Norman Collins III, the baby known as “Bishop,” was unresponsive when he was found.

“The infant died as a result of conditions consistent with hypothermia,” said Rodger Harris with the coroner’s office, according to Fox 13 News in Memphis, Tenn.

The station says Collins told them he feels responsible for his son’s death and it’s something he’ll have to live with the rest of his life. It also says Collins Jr. is charged with negligent manslaughter and that he appeared before a judge on Tuesday before being released on a $30,000 bond. The case will go before a Grand Jury.

Bishop’s grandfather, Norman Collins Sr., told WREG Channel 3 in Memphis, “Accidents happen. But you know, we love our son and our daughter-in-law. They know they have our unrelenting support.”

He says the family is just trying to make it through the tragedy.

“Pray for them, and not be in judgment of people regarding things because no one knows everything that happened,” Collins Sr. told WREG. “We’ve just left this in God’s hands and we’re asking Him to heal us.”
