Baby of Stranded Couple Safely Delivered During Buffalo Snowstorm; 'It's Not Odds, It's God,' Dad Says
Parents of a new baby girl in Buffalo, New York are thanking God for sending "two angels" after they became stranded in a snowstorm on Tuesday.
In the midst of a lake-effect snowstorm that buried western New York earlier this week, Bethany Hojnacki of south Buffalo went into labor in the early morning hours on Tuesday. Making matters worse, the new mother could not get to the hospital due to the severe weather, and she and her husband became stranded roadside. Speaking to CNN's Anderson Cooper, Bethany's husband Jared Hojnacki revealed that they miraculously received help with their daughter's arrival along the way.
"It was kind of incredible," Hojnacki said on Wednesday. "God really put the people who needed to be in the right spot for us at the right time."
Desperate and alone, the Hojnacks first encountered a woman who was also stranded that happened to be a labor and delivery nurse. The new dad explained that the nurse stayed with his wife throughout the labor and delivered the baby girl at a firehouse nearby. Lucy Grace Hojnacki was born around 9:30 p.m. EST on Tuesday, according to WIVB.
In another astonishing coincidence, a second stranded woman at the firehouse turned out to be a maternity nurse who was able to help with the new baby. When asked about the odds of the series of events, Hojkack cited his faith.
"It's not odds, its God," he said while on CNN. "It's more than amazing. We're so blown away by God's grace."
Meanwhile, storms continue to cripple cities and towns near Buffalo, with some areas receiving over five-and-a-half feet of snow. Authorities confirmed an eighth death blamed on the storm on Thursday, and several homes have been lost after buckling under the weight of the snow. More snow is expected in Buffalo and surrounding areas on Thursday.
