Former Orioles Pitcher Vance Worley Joins the Marlins
Looks like the Baltimore Orioles have missed out on Vance Worley.
The team was reportedly interested in a reunion with the pitcher, but Worley has decided to sign a minor league deal with the Miami Marlins instead.
FOX Sports has reported that the deal is still pending a physical. If everything is fine, the Marlins plan to assign him to their Triple-A affiliate, the New Orleans Baby Cakes. According to MLB Trade Rumors' Connor Byrne, Worley may get a chance to make the rotation this season.
"Miami's group of starters features plenty of question marks, while experienced depth options like Justin Nicolino, Odrisamer Despaigne and Kyle Lobstein don't inspire much confidence," he said in his report.
Worley became a free agent when the Orioles chose to non-tender him last December. He signed a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals in January, but he was released at the end of spring training.
The Orioles could have pursued him when he cleared waivers and manager Buck Showalter seemed to be open to the idea of bringing the pitcher back despite the fact that he has not spent any time with the team during spring training.
"It's different with a guy like Worley because you have a prior [history] with him. It's like he's been through camp with us. In fact, he's been through the fire of the season. The other guys, this is where your professional scouting comes into play and [executive vice president Dan Duquette's] trust factor in those evaluations, whether 'X' player is better than the player you've got here," Showalter said, according to the Baltimore Sun.
In 35 games with the Orioles last season, Worley posted a 3.53 earned run average in over 86.2 innings. Aside from the Orioles and the Nationals, Worley has also played with the Philadelphia Phillies, the Minnesota Twins and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
