The Baltimore-Washington conference of the United Methodist Church opened its 222nd annual meeting at the Waterfront Marriott Hotel in Baltimore yesterday.
Highlights of the event, which lasts through Saturday, included a clergy session, a special orientation for first-time laity, covenant service commemorating the 50th anniversary of the granting of full clergy rights for women.
The annual conference is the largest legislative gathering for the regional body, which is made up of about 210,000 members in nearly 700 United Methodist churches in Central and Western Maryland, Washington, D.C., and the eastern panhandle of West Virginia.
Throughout the conference, delegates will discuss business issues concerning the 2007 budget and healthcare, and will partake in the ordination service of new Methodist ministers.
