Bar Refaeli Asks Roger Waters to Stop Using Image in Light of Call for Israeli Boycott
Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli has asked Pink Floyd performer Roger Waters to stop using her image after the superstar posted a letter asking fans to boycott Israel and listing several "breaches of international law." Waters has not yet responded to Refaeli's request.
Waters is a member of the Palestinian activist group Electronic Intifada, according to New York Daily News. He has been an outspoken critic of Israel, but his letter set off a new round of debates, and Refaeli's public request has brought new attention to the Israeli-Palestinian debates.
"Roger Waters, you better take my picture off of the video art at your shows," Refaeli tweeted in Hebrew. "If you're boycotting – go all the way."
Her request came after the online letter posted to Facebook by Waters, which was addressed to his "brothers and sisters in the family of Rock and Roll" and "thousands of other artists around the world."
"Given the inability or unwillingness of our governments, or the United Nations Security Council to put pressure on Israel to cease these violations, and make reparations to the victims, it falls to civil society and conscientious citizens of the world, to dust off our consciences, shoulder our responsibilities, and act," the letter read.
"I write to you now… to declare a cultural boycott on Israel, to shed light on these problems and also to support all our brothers and sisters in Palestine and Israel who are struggling to end all forms of Israeli oppression and who wish to live in peace, justice, equality and freedom," Waters wrote.
At present, Israel and Palestine are holding Middle East peace negotiations, which are being helped along with U.S. involvement. Talks between the two countries had broken down for three years, but talks were only just recently reopened last month.
"Both sides parted, agreeing the meeting had been serious and that they will continue the talks at a near date," an Israeli statement read after a meeting on Tuesday.
Neither side has revealed what the negotiated terms may be or what was said during the discussion.
