It is suspected that he will be helping Norma, played by Vera Farmiga, to try to get her son into the institution. The previous season revealed that Norma could not afford putting her son through the mental institution. Therefore, Dr. Edwards could be the one to help Norma achieve her goal.

With that, there are speculations as to how he will affect the story in the episodes to come. It was rumored that he could be the new love interest of Norma. The news of Gupton's introduction surely worried fans who are hoping to see Norma end up with Sheriff Romero, played by Nestor Carbonell.

Fortunately, the executive producer of the series, Carlton Cuse, was quick to address the matter. During an interview with Yahoo TV, he reassured fans that they will become an official couple. He said, "We feel like we have an epic couple with Norma and Romero. We plan to deliver on the promise of that at some point, in some form. Our intention is to make people want them to get together. You should be wanting them to get together."

"Bates Motel" season 4 will premiere on A&E in spring 2016.
