'Battle of the Sexes': Stars Emma Stone, Steve Carrell; Premieres Sept. 22

"Battle of the Sexes," an upcoming movie by Fox Searchlight about a landmark tennis match that took place in 1973, will be showing in theaters on Sept. 22. The film stars Steve Carell and Emma Stone as the opposing players in the highly publicized man-versus-woman tennis match.

The movie will follow the true story of the events that led up to the iconic 1973 tennis match between world number one women's tennis player Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and past champion and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell), as summarized by the movie's new entry in IMDb.

This fated tennis game was highly publicized, eventually being billed as the "Battle of the Sexes" on the days leading up to the highly anticipated televised match. This round of tennis will go on to become one of the most watched sports events of all time. Before, during and after the match, the contest has already become a spark that would ignite the global feminist movement and started the 70s generation on the path of better awareness of the issues of gender equality.

Both players have their own story to tell behind and away from the watching eyes of the public waiting for the historic match. The summary by Fox Searchlight tells their struggles. "With a supportive husband urging her to fight the Establishment for equal pay, the fiercely private King was also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, while Riggs gambled his legacy and reputation in a bid to relive the glories of his past."

The movie will be led by stars Steve Carell and recent Oscar winner Emma Stone as the two tennis stars in the legendary 1973 tennis match. Together with Elisabeth Shue, Alan Cumming, Andrea Riseborough, Sarah Silverman and Bill Pullman, the cast will be directed by husband-and-wife team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris from the script of Simon Beaufoy, according to Deadline.
