'Battleborn' Gameplay News: Developers Stop Working on Updates 15 Months Since Release; Servers Stay Up

Game director Randy Varnell recently announced that they were partially cutting off support for the first-person shooter video game "Battleborn" as players can no longer expect upcoming updates. However, the game's servers will remain functional.

"Battleborn" was released by developer Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games on May 3, 2016. However, Varnell and his team deemed it was time to stop its flow of game patches.

In an open letter to fans and gamers through Gearbox Software's community forum, Varnell confirmed on Sept. 16: "As of this week, there will be no more Battleplans and there is currently no planned content after the Fall Update. Details of any future changes or news will be made on our forums or through social media, so keep your radars on."

Varnell then assured players that "Battleborn is here to stay" and added that the game's server will continue running "for the foreseeable future."

In the same statement, Varnell confirmed the reason behind their partially ending support for "Battleborn" was another upcoming project.

"If you've been paying attention to recent news from the Gearbox Panel at PAX West, you'll have heard that many folks at Gearbox are working on a highly anticipated project. Although I'm sad my time on Battleborn is coming to a close, I'm happy to announce that I will play a significant role on this highly anticipated but unannounced game," Varnell added.

"Battleborn" was commonly compared to Blizzard Entertainment's massive hit "Overwatch" as it was also popular for its use of hero characters and featuring multiplayer online battle gameplay elements mainly in the entire game.

Despite the announcement bringing generally bad news, the comments made on Varnell's letter were overwhelmingly positive and thanked the game's creative director "for everything," as one player said. Another player also noted that he or she had expected the announcement to come but still became emotional when it did. Meanwhile, others expressed that they were looking forward to Varnell's next work.
