BBM for Android and iOS Release Date Delayed by BlackBerry
The BBM for Android and iOS release date has been pushed back by BlackBerry.
The company was supposed to roll out the messaging software over the weekend, however; it never arrived leaving many Apple and Android fans disappointed and confused.
The delay was caused by an unreleased version of the app leaking onto the internet before BlackBerry launched the official one. The unofficial version ended up on over 1.1 million phones in just the first eight hours. This caused some issues with the experience, according to BlackBerry who is attempting to correct those problems at this time.
BBM was supposed to roll out for both Android and iOS over this past weekend, according to an announcment made by the company last week.
"That's right BBM fans- the iconic mobile social network will begin rolling out for Android and iPhone customers around the world from Sept. 21," wrote Blackberry on its official site. "Soon, you'll be able to easily connect with friends on different platforms."
BBM was supposed to be available as a free download on those dates and will only be compatible with Android devices running Ice Cream Sandwich and above and Apple devices running iOS 6 and above. The exact times for the roll outs were also announced as the Android version was going to be released at 7 a.m. on Sept. 21 and for iPhone users at 12:01 a.m. local time on Sept. 22.
"BBM is a very engaging messaging service that is simple to use, easy to personalize and has an immediacy that is necessary for mobile communications," said Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President for BBM at BlackBerry. "With more than a billion Android, iOS, and BlackBerry smartphones in the market, and no dominant mobile instant messaging platform, this is absolutely the right time to bring BBM to Android and iPhone customers."
