Because of Prayer and Love
New family movie conveys message of love and reconciliation
Because of Winn-Dixie, a family-oriented and faith-based movie, opened in theaters on Feb. 18.
Based on the children's book by Kate DiCamillo, the movie retells the story of 10-year-old Opal who adopts a stray dog. She is abandoned by her alcoholic mother and moves to a small town in Florida with her father, who pastors Open Arms Baptist Church.
In her loneliness in the unfamiliar town, Opal prays for companionship, asking God for friends. Almost immediately, an orphan dog is sent across her way and becomes her new friend.
Given the name Winn-Dixie, named after the market where he was found, the dog opens doors to new friendships for Opal and heals the broken relationship between her and her father.
Throughouth the movie, Opal and those around her learn of the importance of unconditional love.
"I generally make movies about something that is missing in our lives, empty places that we're trying to fill," said director Wayne Wang.
With a message of love, faith, prayer, and reconciliation, families are encouraged to view the heart-warming film.
