Ben Affleck $1.50 Promise: Actor Signs Up for 'Below the Line' Poverty Campaign (VIDEO)
Ben Affleck will live on $1.50 a day for five days after signing up for the "Below the Line" project aiming to raise awareness about global poverty.
The Hollywood actor has signed up to be a high profile name taking part in the project, joining other celebrities such a Josh Groban, Debi Mazar, Sophia Bush and Hunter Biden who have all also signed up.
The Below the Line website has described itself as: "Live Below the Line is an initiative of the Global Poverty Project, an education and campaigning organization whose mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of people taking action against extreme poverty … The challenge? Spend 5 days feeding yourself with $1.50 a day – the U.S. equivalent of the extreme poverty line."
According to Michael Trainer, U.S. Country Director of The Global Poverty Project, "Last year we had over 15,000 people participate, and raised over $3 million. We're excited to leverage the support The Global Poverty Project has received from the campaign last year, and the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park."
The news comes just a few months after Affleck's film "Argo" took home the award for Best Picture, becoming only the 7th film not to take the Best Director accolade - which went to Ang Lee for "Life of Pi" - when winning Best Picture.
Ben Affleck made a passionate acceptance speech that had wife Jennifer Garner with tears in her eyes, and he seemed not to be put off by being snubbed for the Best Director category.
The actor celebrated the award win by shaving off his beard. According to reports, Affleck had kept his beard grown as he awaited for the awards ceremony to take place, believing it was a kind of luck charm.
The Hollywood actor could be seen on the red carpet and on stage with his scruffy beard, however, according to celebrity news website TMZ the "Argo" actor shaved the beard off just hours later at an after party.
Affleck was said to have shaved off the beard in the hallway of Craig's restaurant as a type of celebration and conclusion to his win.
According to a source, he shaved because "his family was tired of the beard," according to The Examiner.
