Ben & Jerry's Cannoli Ice Cream Makes Waves

Vermont's famed ice cream company Ben & Jerry's has released a new cannoli-flavored treat on Wednesday.

The Limited Batch cold dessert boasts a mascarpone base with fudge and is filled with cannoli pieces, in addition to a mascarpone swirl.

"Here's our latest take on this classic Sicilian pasty- Mascarpone Ice Cream with Fudge Covered Cannoli Pastry Shell Chunks & a Mascarpone Swirl," explained the Burlington, VT ice cream experts in a press release. "You won't find this cannoli in any bakery, but for a limited time you can pick some up in your grocer's freezer. Scoop some up before it's gone!"

Cannoli is not Ben & Jerry's first attempt to feature the Italian dessert in its ice cream creations; the company previously released Holy Cannoli.

"We made a cannoli flavor with ricotta before and it bombed," Ben & Jerry's explained on its Facebook page. "It was called Holy Cannoli. This is a new take on it and we think it tastes better than Holy Cannoli did. We hope you do too!"

Ben & Jerry's is known for releasing unconventional and humorously titled flavors.

Last year, the company released the Limited Edition Schweddy Balls flavor, which featured vanilla ice cream with fudge-covered rum balls and milk chocolate malt balls. The title was inspired by the 1999 "Saturday Night Live" skit starring Alec Baldwin who portrayed Pete Schweddy.

Moreover, Ben & Jerry's stirred controversy when they cunningly renamed its famous Chubby Hubby flavor to Hubby Hubby after Vermont legalized gay marriage in 2009. The flavor's name was produced in partnership with the activist group Freedom to Marry.

The altered name of the famous peanut butter, pretzel, and cookie dough ice cream lasted through September of that year, and CEO of Ben & Jerry's, Wal Freese, explained the stance of the company in a press release.

"The legalization of marriage for gay and lesbian couples in Vermont is certainly a step in the right direction, and something worth celebrating with peace, love- and plenty of ice cream," said Freese.

Speaking to The Christian Post in the past, Ben & Jerry's spokesperson Sean Greenwood said that every decision made at the ice cream company revolves around part of their motto, "If it's not fun, why do it?"

Ice cream, Greenwood said, is a "feel good product," and the department at Ben & Jerry's responsible for naming flavors "make a holistic effort to tie into pop culture," creating entertaining names.

Other entertaining flavor titles include Pulp Addition, named after the movie "Pulp Fiction," and Full VerMonty, named after the movie "The Full Monty," among many others.
